Many of us remember what it was like to be a child and to be transfixed by the beauty and mystery of a simple flame. Symbolically speaking, God uses light to draw us to Him. The verses before this passage tell us that this light is Christ. As we believe, regardless of our age, we become like children. He transforms our disbelief into wonder and into awe. This painting captures that moment when a child looks up to the holder of the flame.
This painting is based on verse 12 of John 1, "But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God."
