Of the many images that come to mind from 9/11, this is one that I want to remember. I was on a subway train from Brooklyn to Soho when the first plane hit. At the time, I was working as a legal secretary for an art lawyer who worked on the 5th floor of a building with a large conference room window facing downtown Manhattan. I remember watching the second tower collapse through that window. The days and weeks that followed were surreal. On one of those days, my boss, invited me to his house in Soho, to pick up something and I stepped outside to see his garden. I was shocked by how still and lovely it was, such tranquility in the middle of a shaken city. On that day, God gave me a glimpse of a bright and colorful reflection of a healthy and gorgeous tree in a fountain, hinting that one day He will exchange beauty for ashes.
...and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.” Isaiah 61:3
